Message from Dr. B - This Week at Fern Drive

Hello Fern Drive!

Each year, Fern Drive teachers nominate colleagues for Teacher of the Year.  It’s such a hard choice because ALL of Fern Drive’s teachers are amazingly talented. This year’s teacher of the year is no exception!

She has taught a few different grade levels over her career at Fern Drive.  Her colleagues describe her as creative, a technology wizard, student centered and a crucial part of her PLC team.  This teacher pours her heart into all that she does – re-vamping  her curriculum each year to make sure students are learning at high levels.  She LOVES hyperdocs and utilizes technology seamlessly into her daily instruction.

She has been in charge of student council for as long as I can remember – creating strong, bright leaders of our Fern Drive Falcons!  She plans ALL of our wonderful school spirit days, community outreach and fundraisers.

Congratulations to Mrs. Price as Fern Drive’s Teacher of the Year!!

Trimester three is upon us!  Let’s finish this school year #falconstrong!!

Read Across America Is next week!  We will celebrate our love of reading and literature with guest readers (virtual) and spirit days!

Monday- Wear Red or Blue for Red Fish, Blue Fish

Wednesday- Dress as your favorite book character

Friday- Warm up with a good book and wear your pajamas

PBIS Art Contest!  Calling all artists! It's your time to shine with our Fern Drive artwork contest!  At Fern Drive, we are Respectful, Responsible and Safe.  We have these personal standards on banners across the school.   This art contest is to create NEW banners!!

Students in TK - 6 need to  create a drawing emphasizing "spreading kindness" and our PBIS rules.  Our goal is to select one piece of artwork from each grade level to make these new PBIS Banners.

Artwork can be turned into the front office and should be completed on an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper.  Crayons/markers are preferred, as the artwork will be created with  a digital format.  We don't want to lose the integrity of the art.

Artwork is due to the office no later than Friday, March 19th.  Virtual students can scan artwork to Julie_Brandon@myfsd.org.

A few reminders:

Attendance - If your student is going to miss school, please call the attendance line @ (714) 447-2813.   The school listens to the answering machine daily.  If for some reason you receive aConnect Ed message regarding your Falcon being absent, it means we did not receive a message.  Please call the school at 714-447-7710 to excuse the absence.  After 5 days, we can not make any changes to student absences.

Students are expected to participate in school on zoom until 11:30 (TK/K)  2:15 (Grades 1, 2, 3) and 2:25 (grades 4, 5, 6) each day.   Teachers are using afternoon time to help support students that need help, PE is during this time (all students are expected to participate) or teaching enrichment lessons. Students should not be leaving school until the end of the day.  Thank you for your support with this!

Learning Models – We ask that you please keep the learning model you are currently on until the end of the school year, May 28th.  Thank you to those of you that contacted the office to make any changes.

As part of our Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) we want to remind all students to keep their cameras on.   This lets the teacher know they are there and engaged in learning.

PE – Students must be singed in their myfsd account.  You must be an “authenticated user” to join.  This is something you  don’t need to worry about if you log in from your school iPad with your Google credentials.

Hybrid/5 days students -  First - sixth grade students are expected to be on Zoom for PE on the day they are NOT in class with their teachers.

Virtual students – your PE days are Thursday and Friday.  First and second grades, your PE time is 1:15 – 1:45  Grades 3 – 6 your PE time is 1:50 – 2:20.

For safety reasons, siblings should be on their own iPads signed in – this way they get credit for participating.

TK/K students – since PE is out of your instructional day – the virtual PE in the afternoon is not mandatory (but a lot of fun).  TK/K students on campus receive PE during the instructional day.   PE is 30 minutes once a week for TK and K students on campus – this is to practice balance, coordination and skill acquisition.

Save the Date!  March 18th will be our Virtual Family Arts night!  Come join our All the Arts Foundation musicians, dancers and artists for a wonderful evening of arts!!!  More info to come.

Spring Conferences – Are the week of March 8 – 12.  All students in grades 1 – 6 will be on a minimum schedule with dismissal at 1:15 each day.  Your teachers will contact you to schedule your conference.  Please make every effort to attend.

TK – 2nd Grade Virtual English Learners – we will have your 1:1 ELPAC testing date on 3/31 from 2 – 4pm.  Make ups for students that missed our February 10th test date can come at this time.  We will also be scheduling group testing time on Wednesdays for all virtual EL students, grades 3, 4, 5 and 6.  Students will most likely need to come to school two to three times for a two hour testing session.  If a remote option is offered, we will let you know.
